Birding at Prime Hook NWR: Featuring an American Goldfinch (4/8/21)

We birded in three areas of the refuge. The purple martins have returned to their apartments in front of the Visitor’s Center. Other birds in this area included American robin, red-winged blackbird, and chipping sparrow. The Dike Trail alone produced 32 species including ospreys, Canada geese, Forster’s and common terns, laughing gulls, American avocets, flocks of dunlins, two adult bald eagles, green-winged teal, snowy egrets, and mallards. We saw 27 species along the Boardwalk Trail including eastern towhee, blue-gray gnatcatcher, white-throated sparrow, American goldfinch, greater yellowlegs, green-winged teal, Forster’s tern, and yellow-rumped warbler.
